Canyon Diablo is the name of the meteorite that caused the Meteor Crater impact. About 49,000 years ago a large iron meteorite estimated at 100 feet in diameter and weighing about several hundred thousand tons struck the earth near Winslow, Arizona. It was estimated to be traveling 40,000 miles per hour. The impact was the equivalent of a 20 megaton explosion and created a crater 4000 feet wide and 600 feet deep. Huge house sized fragments of lime stone were tossed onto the rim of the crater. Canyon Diablo is classified as a coarse octahedrite (2.0mm) type IA. It was found in 1891 and was the object of extensive attempts to mine the crater for metal in the early 1900's by D.M. Barringer.
